Taiwan Star makes a grab for market share with $20/month unlimited plan
Taiwan Star Cellular is a new market entrant which acquired a 10MHz block of LTE-suitable spectrum in the 900MHz band in the government’s October 2013 spectrum auction. It seems with this move Taiwan Star is targeting price sensitive consumers with in an attempt to gain market share quickly. They plan to grow to 250,000 4G subs to by the end of this year (about 20% of Taiwan’s 4G market)
- Taiwan Star finally began commercial operation of its 4G services, which start from NT$599 (US$20) per month for unlimited data transmission and free calls within Taiwan Star’s network over a two-year contract.
- The low-cost data plan is part of the company’s promotional campaign for launching 4G services and it will continue until October this year.
- The country’s three major operators — Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan Mobile Co. and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. — launched their 4G services in late May and early June, respectively. But their data plans, including free calls, cost at least NT$1,299 per month and allow unlimited data transmission for as much as six months.
